Campeche (City) is an old historical city dating back to the days of pirates and conquistadores. It has a principal centre hosting one of the most beautiful plazas along the Yucatan peninsula . In this plaza one in literally steps away from the City’s cathedral built in the 16th century as well as from an array of beautiful coloured fountains that light up each night. The city has now been redesign with a modern walk and road along its coast, providing a modern and cosmopolitan atmosphere in harmony with it's deep colonial history. The city of Campeche has a lot to offer people who are interested in colonial and indigenous history. You can visit the Fuerte de San Jose' which is a coastal fort that was built to defend the port from frequent pirate attacks. It is an interesting place with a lot of colonial and military history. There is a museum exhibition to visit where you can get a nice view of the port from a raised perspective. Another exciting adventure that is highly recommended is a tour to Edzna'(1.5 hrs by car). The night tours are particularly special as an exciting light and sound show details the history of the Calakmul society. You are asked to sit facing the main temple where the light ,music and sound show is displayed via a historical narrative. The experience is enhanced when the night sky is absent of clouds as many of the temples and building where built in accordance to astronomical points. During the festive season which is in late December to February the nightlife of Campeche is amazing. There are large stages in the outdoors where live bands play their music and people just dance near them. Sometimes special guest bands from Cuba perform . They are very talented musicians and quite impressive to see. The food stores are everywhere and you can get cheap meals just on the street. If you want a more glamorous meal the restaurants there are authentic and serve some delicious and dedicated dishes. Distance From Mexico City: 1295kms (very far!) Climate: Warm to very Hot.
