There is a special park/museum called La Venta which contains some  amazing exhibits of the Olmec and Mayan cultures and includes pottery carvings and stone figurines, astoundingly  in well-preserved conditions, considering their age. The park-museum also has the added advantage of also being a zoo with a large variety of animals of which some roam freely through the park's grounds. In essence one can experience the best of archaeology as well as a zoo. the Yumka zoo also has a wide variety of animals allowed to roam freely.

The city is quite big with a number of special archaeological and scientific areas of interest. The Plaza de Armas of Villahermosa is another major attraction of the city.

In 2007 the city was dealt a cruel blow by hurricane that caused major flooding in the area. Construction  work has been carried out to restore the city to its former state.
