Villahermosa is the capital of the state of Tabasco. It is situated
along the side of the banks of two rivers called Grijalva and Carrizal. This city
is thriving with energy and has a romantic feel to it. There are many
parks along the river where you can stop and appreciate the views.
There is a special park/museum called
La
Venta which
contains some amazing exhibits of the Olmec and Mayan cultures and
includes pottery carvings and stone figurines, astoundingly in well-preserved conditions, considering their age.
The park-museum also has the added advantage of also being a zoo with a
large variety of animals of which some roam freely through the
park's grounds. In essence one can experience the best of
archaeology as well as a zoo. the Yumka zoo also has
a wide variety of animals allowed to roam freely.
The city is quite big with a number of special archaeological and
scientific areas of interest. The Plaza de Armas of Villahermosa
is another major attraction of the city.
In 2007 the city was dealt a cruel blow by hurricane that caused
major flooding in the area. Construction work has been carried out
to restore the city to its former state.
